HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR - A DIY DEVICE.

As a rule of thumb, An ideal Blood Pressure (BP) is considered to be between  100/70 - 120/80mmHg. Although the ideal value varies from individuals, considering the Age, Sex and Country of Origin too.

The BP is considered high at a value >140/90. Conversely, the BP is considered low if it falls <100/70.

Among the different types of BP Monitors available, the UPPER ARM BP MONITOR gives the most reliable results.

To use the Automatic BP Monitor, do the following:

1. Place the cuff around your arm, usually the left arm,
2. Turn on the device by pressing the "start" button,

4. The final reading is displayed on the screen, showing the values - An upper value called the SYSTOLIC BP and a lower value called the DIASTOLIC BP. The last value displayed beneath is the Pulse per min.

OWLAN PHARMA: THE GLUCOMETER

A Glucometer, otherwise known as "Glucose meter", is a Do-it-yourself Medical device used to measure or monitor the estimated concentration of glucose in the Blood per time.

The Glucometer is an essential medical device, and as such, it is a key element of Home Blood Glucose Monitoring (HBGM) by individuals living with Diabetes melliteus (DM) - Hyperglycaemia or those suffering from Low Blood Glucose - Hypoglycaemia.

The primary goal of the management of Hyperglycaemia / Hypoglycaemia is to achieve Close-to-normal levels of Glucose in the Blood at any point in time. By adopting HBGM, the long term complications of Hyperglycaemia  / Hypoglycaemia is reduced or even averted.

To measure the Glucose level in the blood, get a small drop (<1ml) of blood obtained by piercing the skin - Fingertip (Already cleaned with alcohol pads), with a Lancet. This is then placed on a disposable test strip that the meter reads and displays measurements in units of mg/dL or mmol/dL.

To convert from mmol/dL to mg/dL, multiple the displayed value by a factor of 18. For example, A blood glucose measurement of 5mmol/dL is equivalent to 90mg/dL.

                 READINGS AND INTERPRETATION.

For a Fasting Blood Glucose Test, FBGT ( Meaning it's been at least 8hrs you ate your last meal ), the expected, estimated measurement for normal FBGT is between 70mg/dL - 100mg/dL.

Values between 100mg/dL - 125mg/dL is considered Pre-Diabetes State, which requires majorly Lifestyle modifications such as: Change in diet, Regular exercise, Portion control, etc.

For a Random Blood Glucose Test, RBGT ( Meaning the test is conducted at any time of the day without regard to food intake ), values <200mg/dL are considered Normal.

However, if test is conducted 2hrs after meal, otherwise known as 2hrs Post Prandial ( 2HPP ), values <140mg/dL are considered normal.

PS: It is Advisable to rely more on the FBGT to establish a diagnosis, rather than RBGT.

So, today, let us talk about PULSE OXIMETRY.

This has become a topic of interest, especially in a time such as this, where everyone now takes responsibility for thier wellbeing. Individuals now pay close attention to their Health. No doubt, this is not unconnected to the global spread of the Contagious COVID infection.

By definition, PULSE OXIMETRY is a non-invasive, seamless method for monitoring the Oxygen saturation / Oxygen level in an individual. This simple procedure is carried out using a Do-it-yourself - DIY Device called PULSE OXIMETER. ( By DIY, we mean you can operate the device all by yourself, without the assistance of any medical personnel ).

The saturation Oxygen levels could be the Peripheral Oxygen Saturation ( SpO²) or Arterial Oxygen Saturation ( SaO² ). The Fingertip PULSE OXIMETER measures the SpO². Although the PULSE OXIMETER can be clipped to Peripheral body parts, such as the Earlobe and Toe, it is most  commonly put on a finger, usually the Right Middle finger. Hence the name FINGERTIP PULSE OXIMETER.

UPPER VALUE: PULSE RATE (PR). LOWER VALUE: SpO². ALL WITHIN NORMAL RANGE.

The SpO² reading on a PULSE OXIMETER indicates the percentage of Oxygen in an individual's blood per time. The standard normal range is 95% - 100%, with all other things being equal in the health of the individual being tested ( meaning, there is no medical condition being managed ).

An estimate minimum reading of 85% may still be permissible in situations where such individuals are undergoing treatment for chronic medical conditions that affects Oxygen Saturation in the blood. However, readings below 85% should be checked in order to prevent Hypoxia - A condition of reduced Oxygen in the blood, which could be fatal if not properly managed.

It is noteworthy that the functions of the PULSE OXIMETER is not limited to measuring the SpO² only. It also measure the Pulse Rate ( Also known as Heart Rate ), indicated as PR on the screen of the PULSE OXIMETER.

The PR indicates the number of times the heart beats per minute. Generally, A normal resting PR for adults ranges from 60 - 90.
