OWLAN PHARMA: THE GLUCOMETER

A Glucometer, otherwise known as "Glucose meter", is a Do-it-yourself Medical device used to measure or monitor the estimated concentration of glucose in the Blood per time.

The Glucometer is an essential medical device, and as such, it is a key element of Home Blood Glucose Monitoring (HBGM) by individuals living with Diabetes melliteus (DM) - Hyperglycaemia or those suffering from Low Blood Glucose - Hypoglycaemia.

The primary goal of the management of Hyperglycaemia / Hypoglycaemia is to achieve Close-to-normal levels of Glucose in the Blood at any point in time. By adopting HBGM, the long term complications of Hyperglycaemia  / Hypoglycaemia is reduced or even averted.

To measure the Glucose level in the blood, get a small drop (<1ml) of blood obtained by piercing the skin - Fingertip (Already cleaned with alcohol pads), with a Lancet. This is then placed on a disposable test strip that the meter reads and displays measurements in units of mg/dL or mmol/dL.

To convert from mmol/dL to mg/dL, multiple the displayed value by a factor of 18. For example, A blood glucose measurement of 5mmol/dL is equivalent to 90mg/dL.

                 READINGS AND INTERPRETATION.

For a Fasting Blood Glucose Test, FBGT ( Meaning it's been at least 8hrs you ate your last meal ), the expected, estimated measurement for normal FBGT is between 70mg/dL - 100mg/dL.

Values between 100mg/dL - 125mg/dL is considered Pre-Diabetes State, which requires majorly Lifestyle modifications such as: Change in diet, Regular exercise, Portion control, etc.

For a Random Blood Glucose Test, RBGT ( Meaning the test is conducted at any time of the day without regard to food intake ), values <200mg/dL are considered Normal.

However, if test is conducted 2hrs after meal, otherwise known as 2hrs Post Prandial ( 2HPP ), values <140mg/dL are considered normal.

PS: It is Advisable to rely more on the FBGT to establish a diagnosis, rather than RBGT.
